Craniofacial Fellowship

The American Society of Craniofacial Surgeons (ASCFS) is a national society that serves to furnish leadership and foster advances in craniofacial surgery. In order to ensure that every fellowship provides a comprehensive learning experience to fellows, the ASCFS has created a formal structure that enables each craniofacial fellowship program to earn accreditation status.

How does a craniofacial fellowship program earn ASCFS accreditation?

Each ASCFS-accredited fellowship program must satisfy the following requirements:

①  Affiliation with an ACGME-accredited plastic surgery residency program

②  Multiple teaching faculty

③  A minimum number of cases in 3 main categories (transcranial, maxillofacial, and cleft surgeries) each year

④  A minimum number of total cases each year

When reviewing the craniofacial fellowship programs, the "accredited" designation signifies that the ASCFS has granted endorsement to the program following a comprehensive evaluation. This designation is important to consider when applying to a craniofacial fellowship.

Certificate of Added Qualification (CAQ):

Upon completion of an ASCFS-accredited craniofacial program, a fellow will be granted to opportunity to earn a Certificate of Added Qualification (CAQ) in Craniofacial Surgery.

To qualify for a CAQ, the fellow must:

①  Complete an ASCFS-accredited craniofacial fellowship program

②  Earn a passing score (80%) on a knowledge-based exam at the end of the fellowship

③  Complete the fellow survey

  • This CAQ is independent of the ABMS and awarded through the ASCFS
